On the first day of the LDComics Weekend Festival 2020 on Saturday 28 March, we are offering 60-minute one-to-one sessions to critically review your work with a leading cartoonist practitioner.

Your work does not have to be finished to participate and you can use the sessions for professional advice and practical help.

The cost of the sessions are subsidized by funding received by LDComics from Arts Council England and the expertise of 11 reviewers will be available to you. The sessions will be allocated on a first come first served basis and there is no limit to the number of sessions you can book.

The review sessions are open to all genders.

COST: £50/per session.

Ticket sales will end on the 21 March at 11pm.

RACHAEL BALL

Her first book, ‘The Inflatable Woman’ (Bloomsbury), was one of the Guardian’s Best graphic novels 2015. Her second graphic novel, ‘Wolf’ (Selfmadehero 2018), was funded by Arts Council England and was described by the Times Literary Supplement as ‘wildly inventive, poignant and elegiac’ and by Pipedream Comics as ‘a ‘timeless classic.’ She taught art in secondary schools for 16 years and now teaches graphic novel masterclasses and a summer graphic novel residency at the House of Illustration, a children’s book course at The Art Academy and more recently taught children’s book illustration at Cambridge University for the Pathways Children’s Illustration course. She has discussed her work on Radio 4’s Women’s Hour and was a guest at The Edinburgh Book Festival in 2019.

She is a coordinator of the London branch of LDComics and is currently working on her 3rd graphic novel, ‘The Patsy Papers.’

HANNAH BERRY

is an award-winning comics creator, cartoonist, and, incredibly, UK Comics Laureate 2019-21. She is the author of three graphic novels published by Jonathan Cape: LIVESTOCK, ADAMTINE, and BRITTEN & BRÜLIGHTLY has been a regular cartoonist for THE NEW STATESMAN and PROSPECT MAGAZINE and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She enjoys long walks on the beach and talking to you about your project/career in comics.

EMMA BURLEIGH

won the 2018 Laydeez do Comics Prize for her graphic novel, a watercolour memoir about her relationship with her birth mother who relinquished her for adoption. She’s passionate about the vibrant and mercurial qualities of watercolour, and she’ll bring her paints to offer watercolour support, demos, and troubleshooting during your session if you’d like. She’s interested in giving visual form to non-verbal, emotional and psychological states, and she self publishes Zines, teaches Comics, and runs Mindful Art Journaling courses. Emma co co-ordinates the Bristol branch of ‘Laydeez do Comics’. Right now she’s creating a book on Mindful Watercolour for the publishers Liminal 11.

WALLIS EATES

was shortlisted for the Myriad Editions First Graphic Novel award in 2014 for her graphic memoir, ‘Mumoirs’. Since then she has self-published zines and comics to critical acclaim and widened her remit to working in collaboration with others to share their stories. This has included survivors of brain injury, boxers, prisoners and adults with dementia. Wallis collaborated with Dr. Victoria Anderson and inmates of HMP Wandsworth culminating in ‘Wings’, a book of prose, comics and illustration due to be launched this year having been funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign, and she is currently crowdfunding ‘Like an Orange’ through publishers Unbound Books – a graphic narrative inspired by her residency with the charity Headway who help to rehabilitate brain injury survivors. Wallis is also a London coordinator for Laydeez Do Comics.

EMILY HAWORTH-BOOTH

is an author and illustrator whose debut picture book ‘The King Who Banned the Dark’ was nominated for ten awards including the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration. Her most recent picture book, ‘The Last Tree’, was published on 6th Feb 2020 and has been described by The Bookseller as a thought-provoking ecological fable’ and The Sunday Times as ‘One to Watch Out For’. She is currently working on a non-fiction children’s book as well as on her long-form graphic memoir about (among other things) climate change, which was shortlisted for the LDC Prize in 2017. Emily won the Observer/Cape/Comica Graphic Short Story Prize in 2013 for her story ‘Colonic’, and has taught the graphic novel courses at the Royal Drawing School for ten years. She was recently described by a student as ‘the story osteopath’. Her favourite things about teaching are seeing a student’s creative confidence grow as they find their voice and the collaborative joy of working out story problems together. KRIPA JOSHI

is the creator of Miss Moti, a plump brown character who blurs the line between fantasy and reality. Originally from Nepal, she studied Illustration at the School of Visual Arts, New York, with a Fulbright scholarship. In 2016 she started the Miss Moti-vation series, a weekly illustration of Miss Moti with a motivational quote. Miss Moti has been featured in BBC Women’s Hour, BBC Asian Network, the Guardian and other international publications. Her work has also been exhibited at the Lightbox, Transport Museum and at the House of Illustration as part of the Comics Creatrix exhibition. Kripa has co-edited the Strumpet, a transatlantic women’s comic anthology, and also conducted art and comic workshops for children.

SIMONE LIA

is an award-winning comic artist/illustrator/writer. She has written and illustrated several children’s books and graphic novels, including Fluffy (Jonathan Cape) and They Didn’t Teach THIS at Worm School (Walker Books). She’s written comic strips for adults and children for numerous publications including The Independent on Sunday, The DFC, The Phoenix and she has a weekly strip The Simone Lia Cartoon in The Observer. Her comic paintings and drawings have been exhibited across Europe and galleries include The Tate Britain.

SARAH LIPPETT

is a London based artist and author. Her first graphic novel, Stan and Nan, won the Quentin Blake Prize for Best Narrative at the Royal College of Art and was published in 2016 by Jonathan Cape, becoming a Guardian bestseller and 2016 Book of the Year. Her latest autobiographical work, A Puff of Smoke was published by Jonathan Cape in November 2019 and was supported by an Arts Council England Literary grant. The memoir became an Observer graphic novel of the month, a Guardian graphic novel of 2019, and received accolades from the Herald, It’s Nice That and Eye On Design. Alongside her long-form works, Lippett has also created socio-political reportage comics focused on the stories of diverse communities living in locations across the UK and abroad. She lectures and participates in talks and discussions on the graphic novel as an art form at universities, literary festivals and in artist studios, both in the UK and internationally.

JANETTE PARRIS

is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose creative practice investigates the contemporary urban experience, using narrative, humour and popular formats, including soap opera, stand-up comedy, musical theatre, cartoons, comics, and animation. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including Tate Britain & Modern, I.C.A, The New Art Gallery Walsall, Kunsthaus Zürich, Hayward Gallery Touring, Art on the Underground, and was one of six lead contemporary artists selected for Museums at Night 2014. Her comic Arch was included in the British Library exhibition “Comics Unmasked” and is interviewed by artist Bob & Roberta Smith in Joy of Text, a recent broadcast from the BBC Radio 4 documentary series The Art of Now.

LUCY SULLIVAN

is an animator, author, artist and the creator of ‘Barking’ her debut graphic novel, published by Unbound and supported by Arts Council England/ National Lottery funding and co-commissioned by the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. Lucy regularly teaches illustration and animation at a variety of Universities as well as observational drawing. Her current projects include; the artist on ‘INDEXED’ with writer Fraser Campbell, contributing to ‘Hey, Amateur!’ anthology from Black Crown and creating her new comic ’Shelter’ a prequel to her next graphic novel ‘The Bad Old Days’. She is the creator of the zines series ‘1in4Zines’ and ‘How To Build A Feminist.’ She was voted the winner of Broken Frontier’s ‘Break Out Talent’ award 2019.

Artist and writer, author of Becoming Unbecoming (2015), On Sanity (2016), Cree (2018), and Eve (Virago Press 2020, supported by Arts Council England), as well as various commissions. I have an Etsy shop, do public talks and creative writing/drawing workshops and often appear at literature and comics festivals. I’ve been on BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour twice and BBC Radio 3 Free Thinking festival.

I work full time as an artist but I have lectured in fine art, visual communication and illustration in three British art schools.
